Hi, it’s Hanna. I got up for a glass of water on Sunday night and caught myself walking the whole hallway with one hand flat on the wall, the way you do when it is pitch dark and you are half asleep. Such a small thing, and I did not think about it again until the morning. Then I did think about it. So today I went looking at the ordinary spots in a house where a person slips, the tub, the stairs, the dark hallway, and the top shelf you need a chair to reach. My favorites are right up top. The best selling thing on my whole list this morning, which tells you something. A step platform that holds seven hundred pounds, with a non slip top and non slip feet, and the height adjusts, so the same stool works beside the bed, at the kitchen counter, in the shower, or as a hand up into a tall car. This is the honest replacement for the kitchen chair we all stand on when the good bowls are on the top shelf, and I have been meaning to stop doing that for about fifteen years. Clear Non Slip Stair Treads, 20 Pack
This is the one I did not know existed. Twenty clear peel and stick strips, thirty inches long and six inches wide, that go on wooden stairs and grip. You can barely see them from the top of the staircase, so the wood still looks like wood and nobody has to live with rubber mats on a nice set of stairs. Better for us and much better for the dog, who takes those stairs like a lunatic. Twenty eight ninety nine for all twenty.

The cheapest thing on my list this morning and one of the prettiest. A little acrylic sconce that plugs straight into the wall outlet and throws a soft warm glow up the wall and down toward the baseboard, so a dark hall stops being a black tunnel. It has a dusk to dawn sensor, so it lights itself when the room goes dark and shuts itself off in the morning, and you can dim it down if it is too bright beside a bedroom. Nine ninety nine. One for the hall, one for the bathroom, one at the top of the stairs.
