Is That Amazon Deal Actually Real? How to Tell in 30 Seconds

Here’s the honest truth after years of chasing deals: most of the “sales” you see on Amazon aren’t sales. That big crossed-out price and the cheerful “60% off” are often just decoration. The good news is that once you know the three things I check, you can tell a real deal from a dressed-up one in about thirty seconds — no app required.

1. Ignore the crossed-out price

The “list price” (the one with the line through it) is the single most misleading number on the page. Amazon lets sellers set it, and plenty of them set it high on purpose so the discount underneath looks dramatic. I’ve seen the same $12 item wear a “$39.99” list price one week and a “$24.99” the next. The strike-through is marketing, not history. 2. Look at the real price history

The only price that tells the truth is the one the item has actually sold for over the last few months. Two free tools show you exactly that — CamelCamelCamel and Keepa. Paste in the Amazon link and you’ll see a little graph. If today’s price sits at or near the bottom of that graph, you’ve found a real deal. If the line has been flat at this exact price for weeks, the “sale” is just Tuesday with a sticker on it. 3. Check the price after the coupon and Subscribe & Save

The number in big type isn’t always the number you pay. Many good deals hide in a little “clip coupon” checkbox, or drop another 5–15% if you choose Subscribe & Save. A 30-second checklist

• Cover the crossed-out price with your thumb. Would you pay this final number if there were no “sale” at all?
• Glance at CamelCamelCamel/Keepa — is this at or near its lowest?
• Is there a coupon to clip or a Subscribe & Save discount to add?
