Oil of lemon eucalyptus (sometimes labeled OLE) is the plant-based pick if you'd rather skip the synthetics. The CDC actually lists it alongside DEET and picaridin as effective. It's gentler on kid skin — and on grandkid skin — than the old yellow can.

Are DEET-free repellents safe for the grandkids?
Picaridin and oil of lemon eucalyptus are both DEET alternatives the CDC lists as effective. Picaridin is considered safe for kids two months and older. Oil of lemon eucalyptus has an age cutoff at three years old — don’t use it on a child younger than that. For toddlers and infants, picaridin in lotion form is the easier pick: no spray cloud, you control where it goes, and there’s no flammable propellant near a curious kid. Don’t apply any repellent to little kids’ hands (they put their hands in their mouths). One application before they go out, then reapply at the four to six hour mark if you’re still outside.
Do those Thermacell stations actually work?
Yes, for a defined zone — but only when you’re sitting still. A Thermacell unit heats a small mat that releases allethrin (a synthetic version of the natural pyrethrin found in chrysanthemums). How do you tell a real Amazon repellent listing from a knockoff?
Stick with the brands that have been on Amazon for years and have hundreds of thousands of reviews: Sawyer, Repel, Murphy’s Naturals, Cutter, Off! (the DEET-free Botanicals line), and Wondercide. If a listing has fewer than 500 reviews, a price that’s 60% under everyone else, and a brand name that looks like a random acronym, it’s a third-party seller making a quick run on a trending category. The ‘natural’ niche is the worst offender — there’s no FDA rule against calling a spray ‘natural,’ so the listing photo can look identical to the trusted brand but what’s in the bottle could be anything. Two checks before you buy: the active ingredient is named on the front of the bottle, and the brand is one of the names above on the cap.
